Fly Tying 101: Intro to Fly Tying

Bob, our resident fly fishing expert, will give an in-depth presentation for those looking to explore the art of tying flies.

This class will introduce the beginning fly tyer to the following:

  • July 11 Week 1- Introduction to Fly Tying: Basic tools, Materials, and Techniques
  • Join us and discover the hobby of fly tying. In this class you will learn about basic tools, materials, and techniques that will form the foundation to tying more complex flies. As we work through each of the elements from properly seating the bare hook in the jaws of the fly tying vise, to finishing the completed fly ready to fish, the attendee will be tying flies that they can use during their next fishing trip
  • July 18 Week 2-Introduction to Tying the Dry Fly
  • Building on the techniques learned in the first class, the attendee will learn tricks to make tying the dry fly easier, more quickly, as well as planning which flies to tie for the next trip.
  • July 25 Week 3-Introduction to Tying Nymphs
  • Again, building upon previous skills and techniques the attendee will learn to tie the type of flies that make up more than 80% of a any fish’s diet. We will discuss weighting the fly, materials that are most effective for the nymph, hook types and sizes
  • August 1 Week 4-Introduction to Tying Streamers and Wet Flies
  • Building upon the skills, materials, and techniques learned in the first three sessions, the attendee will lean to tie streamers that are of use in both salt and fresh water fly fishing, that are effective for a variety of species.

Having your own vise and tools is encouraged but not required. It is best to practice and learn on your own equipment as that is what you will be utilizing outside of the classroom. If you do not have a vise, one can be provided and they will be first come first serve every week.

The fee for the class will be used to cover the cost of the materials used. They will be yours to keep but keep in mind that no extra materials will be included if you run out before the end of the series. The fee will cover all four classes, there is no discount for joining after the 1st class.

The class will meet in our Community Room at the back of the store.
