Tour de Delaware Art – Unpacking the Artistic Gems of Delaware

DELAWARE COUNTY IS RICH IN ARTS AND CULTURAL OPPORTUNITIES – FROM THE SYMPHONY TO BALLET, FROM THEATER TO OPERA TO SHOPS, WHATEVER YOU’RE LOOKING FOR YOU ARE SURE TO FIND.

Take a tour of Delaware’s artistic venues to awaken your sense of wonder and inspiration. Here are five hidden gems you can visit. But don’t make this a one-and-done kind of visit; return frequently to discover new work and performances for a regular dose of cultural delight:

Stop #1 on our tour is the Arts Castle, a stately home built as a wedding gift in the 1800s. The Arts Castle serves as the Delaware County Cultural Arts Center. The structure itself is stunning, with Romanesque architecture including turrets and arched windows. Home to a variety of classes in the arts, the Arts Castle is adorned throughout the year with rotating art exhibits. Stop in the Gallery Shop to end your visit with your own decorative fine art and craft item. On your way in and out, don’t miss the mosaic talents of Lynda Elias and Virginia Corwin. If you love mosaics, you can take a detour to explore more of these two women’s mosaic work throughout Delaware County – view a list of places you can see more mosaics. Arts Castle is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Stop #2: Venture downtown to Gallery 22, presented by Delaware Arts Castle. Gallery 22 features six exhibits each year for single or multiple artist shows. If it’s been awhile since you visited, stop back in! You’re sure to find something you didn’t see last time. Open Friday and Saturday 6-8:30 p.m.

Stop #3: Two doors down, catch a new release or classic film in the historic Strand Theatre. Built in 1916, the theatre shows today’s blockbusters in a classic viewing space. The Strand also hosts the Ohio Wesleyan University Community Film Series.

Stop #4: Not feeling up for a film? Maybe music is more your taste. The Central Ohio Symphony, which performs concerts in April, May, July, October, and December in the distinguished atmosphere of Gray Chapel at Ohio Wesleyan University. Glance above the symphony at the 4,522 piped Klais Organ, which was built in Germany for Ohio Wesleyan University.

Stop #5: Speaking of the University, Ohio Wesleyan’s Richard M. Ross Art Museum offers a permanent collection of more than 2,500 works by artists such as Pablo Picasso, Frank Stella, and Alfred Stieglitz. In addition to the permanent collection, the museum holds regular exhibitions of student and faculty work, both in the Ross Art Museum as well as the Mowry Alumni Gallery and Gallery 2001 (Beeghly Library). The museum is always free, but make sure to check their hours; they operate on the University’s calendar and observe some of the student breaks. Open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday; 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.
